As a scientific summit, SSA-DPTS 2027 is structured around an open call for abstracts, independent scientific peer review, and a dynamic mix of session formats. We invite researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to share their work and contribute to shaping the regional agenda.

Session Formats:

  • Plenary Sessions:High-level keynote presentations framing each day’s priorities.
  • Abstract-Driven Oral Sessions:Peer-reviewed presentations of original research.
  • Poster Sessions:Facilitated presentations for early-career and youth researchers.
  • Symposia & Panel Debates:Curated sessions on cross-cutting or contested issues (e.g., “kush” response, decriminalisation).
  • Skills-Building Workshops:Practical, competency-based workshops aligned to UNODC/ISSUP curricula.
  • Youth & Community Forum:A dedicated stream for youth-led presentations and dialogue with policymakers.

Thematic Tracks:

We have established eight thematic tracks to structure the scientific program. We invite submissions that align with one of these areas.

  1. Epidemiology & Surveillance:Regional prevalence data, emerging substances (e.g., “kush”), harmonized data systems, and early-warning mechanisms.
  2. Prevention Science & Community Resilience:Universal, selective, and indicated prevention; school- and family-based programmes; and community models.
  3. Treatment, Recovery & Health Systems:Evidence-based treatment protocols, integration into primary health care, harm reduction, and peer-recovery systems.
  4. Youth Leadership & Demand Reduction:Youth-led advocacy, peer education, digital prevention campaigns, and youth research fellowships.
  5. Gender, Vulnerable Populations & Human Rights:Women, children affected by parental use, incarcerated populations, stigma reduction, and rights-based care.
  6. Policy, Supply Reduction & Cross-Border Cooperation:Balanced supply-demand strategies, trafficking routes, alternative development, and alignment with the AU Plan of Action.
  7. Innovation, Technology & Digital Harm Reduction:Tele-counselling, AI for surveillance, mobile-based screening, and digital prevention tools.
  8. Research, Workforce Development & Capacity Building:Professionalisation of the workforce, university partnerships, and fostering a Global South research agenda.
